Congratulations to Helena Omma, reindeer herding Sámi from Porjus, Sweden and ICR Chair of the Board, who successfully defended her PhD on March 6th at Sámi Allaskuvla in Guovdageaidnu, Norway, with her thesis: Várri, duottar, vuopmi ja vuovdi - Jiellevári ja Váissá guovlluid boazosámiid eananterminologiija polysemalaš sániid guorahallan (a study of polysemic words in the land terminology of the reindeer herders of the Jiellevári and Váissa areas).
The present doctoral thesis examines the terminology used by reindeer herding Sámi to describe topography. The aim of this research is to examine the meanings of certain Sámi landscape terms, along with the knowledge and lived experience they embody.
